Recently moved from a different country ?

They are many reasons why one may wish to try counseling. Those reasons may become heightened if one lives outside one’s native country.  Leaving one’s familiar environment may not seem difficult  – but its impact on our psychological balance is often underestimated. When moving to a different country, almost everything familiar needs to be learned again (where to shop, a new language, culture and customs of this new country, etc..). We often lose the close proximity of friends and family. It can be intimidating, frustrating and sometimes isolating.

Meanwhile, we still have to deal with the other “normal” difficulties that everybody faces in its life.

Our Humanity

We are born fragile, vulnerable and limited in our power over things. On one hand, there is  the finiteness of our nature (youth, health, life), the multiplicity of all the social roles that we endorse (parent, spouse, employee, citizen, son / daughter, brother / sister, friend) along with the cultural expectations. All that puts limits on our ability to handle it all.

On the other hand, often in opposition, we have the infinite power of our mind, of our desires and imagination. Suffering may arise from the engagement between the finite and the infinite, points of friction between these two universes. The world is not as we would like it to be, a gap arises between what is and what we believe should be – with the painful consequences resulting from becoming conscious of it. We label that a problem, obstacle and we start experiencing suffering

Suffering as a result of our thoughts

We are limited in our power by innumerable laws; we seek, despite all odds, to shape the world as we believe we understand it, our expectations sometimes  provoking intense suffering for ourselves or others. Our vision of the world as it should be can give rise to rigid and judgmental thoughts that often lack flexibility.

They determine our behaviors, the relationships we have with ourselves and with others and have a high influence on the lives we build for ourselves. They are “thought habits” that become personal doctrine, sometimes unhealthy to ourselves or others.

Here are exemples of some of these thoughts :
– « When I do something, I have to do it perfectly »
– « To be loved, I have to be brilliant »
– « If I’m not at the center of the attention, it means I’m worthless »
– « It’s not normal that… »
